EFFECT OF ROTATIONAL SPEED OF DISC FOR TREATING SUGAR AND DAIRY EFFLUENT STREAMS IN ROTATING BIOLOGICAL CONTACTORS
Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC) is the only aerobic treatment process that has both moving film of attached-growth biomass and suspended growth microbial systems. The laboratory model of 10.125 liters effective volume has three stages; each having 5 numbers of discs with plastic modular exterior finish on both sides. The treatment performance was studied for treating sugar and dairy effluent streams under varying influent flow rates (m3/day), COD (mg/L) and rotational speed of discs (rpm). It is found that 6 rpm of rotational disc speed is enabled the model to offer the maximum COD removal at 91.66% in the case of sugar effluent and 87.57% for dairy effluent streams.
